Extraordinary Cortez District Condo Sold for $137,000
El Cortez is a cherished landmark hotel in San Diego, California constructed from1926 to 1927. It was the tallest edifice in San Diego when it opened in 1927. It is nestled atop a hill at the north end border of Downtown San Diego, where it commanded the city skyline for many years. Between 1927 through the 1950s, it was the most attractive apartment-hotel in San Diego. In 1937, the big "El Cortez" sign was included and could be seen for miles. The global first exterior glass elevator and the first motorized moving sidewalk were constructed at the hotel in the 1950s. Click Here: View All Downtown San Diego Condos! On the late 1960s and 1970s, the El Cortez stumbled on tougher times. The El Cortez stopped operating as a hotel in 1978 when it was bought by evangelist Morris Cerullo to serve as an evangelism school. Cerullo bought the property in 1981, and the El Cortez was endangered by demolition until the San Diego Historic Site Board considered it as a historical place in 1990. It was included in the National Register of Historic Places by 2002. Even though the significant interior changes in the El Cortez are evident, there are still many of the original elements that stay in place. With 310 feet height, the building is known as the 28th tallest building in San Diego, CA. One-bedroom Cortez District condos start from 664 to 820 square feet, while two-bedroom condos range from 880 to 1523 square feet. Most residential units in El Cortez have soaring ceilings and features remnants of Spanish Renaissance Revival Architecture.
